What is WordPress? It’s a content management system that’s better than what you’re using right now. Before I made the (smartest decision of my blogging life) switch to WordPress, I was running on pure HTML and Cutenews. As much as I believe Cutenews is pretty good for it being so small and easy to use, it’s just not as fantastic as WordPress. Cutenews / FanUpdate only allow you to add a small blog posting script. Where as WordPress literally allows you to control your entire website and it’s SO MUCH EASIER. I never have to login to my cPanel or upload anything via FTP anymore. It’s all done in WordPress. Not to mention, there is a HUGEEE WP Support forum that has an answer to any question you can think of.
Usability is a key feature because you don’t have to struggle with figuring out how to use it. Give it a few days and you’ll be a WP master! I migrated my entire site over to WP so basically it took me a week or so to get everything settled. The hardest part about switching is having to make your pages and stuff all over again, but I promise, it’s so worth it.
Another amazing reason to switch is you don’t have to make your own theme from scratch (you can if you’re up to it, but it’s difficult for WP beginners)! There are over a million different themes around the web that are free to download and customize to your liking. There are even base themes that you can use to make your site completely custom like it was before WP. I even offer a couple base themes that look like HTML but have the WP functionality. View those here.
PLUGINS! Plugins make me so excited because there is a plugin for everything. WP plugins are scripts that you can use on your website. My favorite plugin is the Contact Form 7 plugin because I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to make a PHP contact form but it’s hard and annoying but with CF7 you will never have to worry about that again. (& it’s FREE!) Anything you see on my site is probably a plugin, from my Instagram widget on my sidebar to the breadcrumbs that are on every page. Plugins make my world go round. Even my smilies are a plugin, lol. O_O n_n
Tags, Categories, and SEO are needed for your site to help grow an audience. When people search things on Google they are searching tags, that’s it. Tags. If your site doesn’t have any tags then it won’t show up in any search engines! WP has it’s own SEO functionality but you can download an even better one like the one I use called “All In One SEO Pack”. It’s pretty rad.
Anyway, you should heed my advice and upgrade to WordPress. No, this wasn’t a sponsored post or anything I just really, really love WP and I know you will too. If you have cPanel, there is a one-click install of WP there under ‘Softaculous’ or you can download it from WordPress.org. Do it, you’ll wish you’d done it sooner.
